Built in the 17th century, the Forasteros Synagogue served Jewish immigrants — its name meaning “foreigners” or “guests” in Hebrew and Ladino. The synagogue was destroyed by fire, and its courtyard was later used as a kosher poultry slaughterhouse for Yom Kippur atonement offerings.
Though no longer active as a place of worship, the Forasteros Synagogue remains an important part of İzmir’s Jewish heritage and the story of the community’s growth through immigration.
