Construction of the Bet Israel Synagogue began on March 15, 1905, following a decree by Sultan Abdulhamid II, and the synagogue opened for worship in 1907. Internal decoration was delayed by economic hardship and was not completed until 1950.
The synagogue features a unique double Tevah arrangement, rare for İzmir. The Ehal is positioned on the southern wall rather than the traditional eastern wall. A smaller central dome was built due to budget constraints, as the original plan called for a much larger dome.
The woodwork, crafted from mahogany by Italian artisans, is reminiscent of Italian synagogues. The two-storey structure follows tradition: the ground floor for men and the upper floor for women. The upper floor currently houses a small exhibition hall showcasing religious artifacts, documents, and photographs from the community’s history.
